A special Bulletin
The Africa Regional Office in cooperation with the inter country team of UNAIDS in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivore has published a special bulletin focussing on Scouts' response to HIV/Aids in Africa. The bulletin reports the various strategies that different National Scout Organisations/ Associtiations (NSOs/NSAs) are taking in fighting HIV/Aids. Central among these strategies is the integration of HIV/Aids awareness education into the scout activities.
In West Africa, for instance, NSOs/NSAs are collaborating with UNAIDS in an Aids awareness project in seven countries. The project is coordinated by the Dakar Operations Centre of the World Scout Bureau, Africa Regional Office.
In the 10-Year Development Plan for Scouting in the Africa Region, Scouts intervention in the fight against HIV/Aids is a major focus. The region has developed a comprehensive programme encompassing all its NSOs/NSAs. The long-term objective of the programme is to integrate HIV/Aids education into the scout program. The strategy of the program is to change the attitude and behaviour of the Scouts through education as a way of prevention against HIV/Aids. The Scouts will then influence other young people and the wider society, through their behaviour change. The programme hopes to achieve this through training of Scout leaders from the sub regional level down to the patrol leaders level. Information, Education and Communication (IEC), materials will be produced to support the training. These will include booklets, brochures, posters and other audio visual resources.
The Regional Bulletin will be distributed widely in Africa, to all NSOs/NSAs who are members of WOSM and to all other partners of the Scout movement in Africa and beyond.
