Regattas are held at the
Base three times a year. The competition is competed for by
Scouts and Guides in the Western Cape, all vying to win the prize
Binnacle. All competing teams take part in pulling (rowing) and
sailing races, using the standard Scout Saldanha dinghies.
The final regatta of the
year coincides with JOTA and a special radio station is erected for the
event.
THE
KON-TIKI ADVENTURE
The Kon-Tiki raft
competition is one of the highlights of the Western Cape's
calendar. It has become a huge event, attended by more than
2,000 visitors and 600 competitors.
This is a highlight of
the year for all of the Sea Scout Groups. It gives the
Scouts an opportunity to take their Saldanhas to sea.
For the past few years the competition has been run in Simonstown, with
competitiors sailing around Roman Rock lighthouse, weather
permitting. Land crews carry out various other tasks, which
test their Seamanship badge work, while
their fellow Scouts are at sea.
