We all know that Baden-Powell got many of his ideas for Scouting whilst in South Africa. But Scouting officially started in 1907, with an experimental camp held on Brownsea Island in the United Kingdom. Scouting has grown to a worldwide movement, with 28 million members, including boys and girls, men and women of every race, religion and culture, and in almost every country in the world. In 2007, Scouting celebrates its centenary around the world. There will be a number of events throughout the year, including an international Scouting Sunrise celebration at dawn across the globe on 1 August 2007. As part of the centenary celebrations, 40000 Scouts from all over the world will take part in the 21st World Scout Jamboree to be held in England, from 27th July to 8th August 2007. The theme will be One World, One Promise, capturing the aspirations and hopes of young people for the future. South African Scouting hopes to be well represented at the Jamboree. A World Jamboree is a once in a lifetime experience for a Scout, and this one will be particularly special, celebrating 100 years of Scouting. The Jamboree will take place at Hylands Park, a 400 hectares of parkland, woodland and farmland at Chelmsford, Essex, 50 kilometres north-east of London. The South African contingent will spend a week on a a pre-Jamboree tour in the The Netherlands as guests of Scouting Nederland, followed by home hospitality in England.
